Nielsen's 10 heuristics are one of the most cited frameworks in UX. But in 2025, not all of them carry equal weight. Based on auditing products across SaaS, e-commerce, and mobile apps, here are the five that matter most.

1. Visibility of System Status

Users need to know what is happening. Loading states, progress indicators, success confirmations ÔÇö without these, users feel lost.

2. User Control and Freedom

Always give users an exit. Undo. Cancel. Go back. Apps that trap users create anxiety.

3. Error Prevention

The best error message is one that never has to appear. Disable impossible actions. Validate inline. Confirm destructive operations.

4. Recognition Over Recall

Do not make users remember. Autofill. Show recent items. Display contextual help.

5. Aesthetic and Minimalist Design

Every extra element competes with the important ones. This requires discipline to remove features users do not need, even when stakeholders love them.
