If you have worked in a product team, you have felt it. The designer wants to redesign the navigation. The PM wants to ship the feature that is two sprints late. Neither is wrong ÔÇö but without a framework, the result is suboptimal for the product.
Why the Tension Exists
PMs and designers operate on different time horizons. PMs are accountable to quarterly goals. Designers are accountable to the quality of the long-term user experience. Both perspectives are necessary.
Making It Productive
Agree on the problem before proposing solutions. Most PM-designer conflicts happen because solutions are on the table before the problem is clearly defined. Spend the first meeting on the problem statement.
