Every designer has had the conversation. A client looks at a clean layout and says there is too much empty space. It is one of the most persistent misunderstandings in visual design.

What White Space Actually Does

White space is not empty. It is doing work. It creates breathing room between elements, which reduces cognitive load. It draws attention to what remains by removing what does not need to be there.

Premium brands understand this intuitively. Compare the homepage of a luxury watchmaker to a discount retailer. The luxury brand uses generous space. The retailer fills every pixel. Both approaches communicate something specific.
